Harare is a city that rewards knowing which suburb you want before you book. The capital spreads north from a compact colonial-era grid into a long apron of green, low-density suburbs, and the difference between a bed in the city centre and a bed in Borrowdale is the difference between two quite separate visits. This guide walks through the neighbourhoods one at a time, and names the hotels, lodges and guest houses that anchor each of them.
A note on how to read it. We have grouped properties by where they actually sit rather than by price, because in Harare location decides almost everything: how far you are from a meeting, whether you can walk anywhere after dark, how long the airport run takes in traffic. Use the carousel further down to jump straight to availability on any property we mention.
The city centre: close to the desks
The central business district is the obvious base for anyone in Harare to work rather than to wander. It is walkable by day, dense with banks, ministries and the main shopping streets, and quiet at night, when most of the life moves north to the suburbs.
The Monomotapa Hotel is the landmark of the skyline here, a curved tower looking over Harare Gardens, and the kind of address that taxis and contacts recognise without a second prompt. Cresta Jameson sits in the thick of the commercial grid, a long-running business hotel a short walk from the main banking blocks. The New Ambassador Hotel is the older budget option in the same district, plain and central. If your days are spent in the CBD, staying in it saves you the twice-daily crawl through Samora Machel Avenue.
The leafy north: Borrowdale and the suburbs
Most visitors with a choice end up in the northern suburbs, where the plots are large, the streets are lined with jacaranda and msasa, and the shopping is concentrated at Sam Levy's Village and the Borrowdale strip. It is calmer, greener and better for families than the centre, at the cost of a longer drive to town.
Borrowdale itself has the self-catering end of the market well covered. Residence 747 Borrowdale Brooke sits out by the golf estate on the city's northern edge, and listings such as the Borrowdale Ground Floor with Poolview offer whole-apartment stays for travellers who would rather cook than dine out. Closer in, the suburban lodge is the Harare speciality: Cresta Lodge, Sandalwood Lodge, Amanzi Lodge and Malcolm Lodge are all low-rise, garden-set properties of the kind the city does well, trading the bustle of the centre for space and quiet. The Palace Guest House keeps things in Avondale, the inner suburb with the most café and bookshop life within easy reach.
Guest houses and self-catering
Harare's guest-house scene is large, informal and often excellent value, and it is where a lot of regional and diaspora travellers actually stay. These are smaller, owner-run places rather than chains, and the trade-off is consistency for character and price.
Eastwald Guest House sits near the business district for travellers who want a homely base without a city-centre tower. Eden Villas leans towards the shopping side of town, and Simba Harare and the self-described Immaculate 6-Bedroomed Guest House cover the larger-group and longer-stay end, where booking a whole house can make more sense than a string of hotel rooms.
On the water and out of town
For a weekend rather than a work trip, Harare's resort-style properties trade proximity for a change of pace. They sit on the city's watered edges and just beyond, and are best with a car.
Stephen Margolis Resort and Manna Resorts are the waterside options for a slower stay within reach of the city. Further out towards Ruwa, the Ruwa River Herbal Clinic and All-Inclusive Oasis Spa Resort is the most out-of-town of the set, a wellness-led property for travellers who want to be near Harare without being in it. None of these is a base for back-to-back meetings, but all of them are a short hop back to the capital when you need it.
Wherever you land, the airport is on the south-east side of the city, so a centre or southern base is quickest for early flights and a northern one is best for everything else. Browse current availability on the properties above through the carousel below.
