Gweru sits at the heart of the Midlands, almost exactly halfway between Harare and Bulawayo, and it is a city most travellers pass through rather than linger in. Its formal hotel stock is small, so we will be straight about that: the genuine in-and-around-Gweru options are a short list, and for a longer stay the wider Midlands and the two big cities on either side fill in the gaps. The carousel at the end reflects that, widening out beyond the town.

What Gweru does have is one genuinely distinctive place to stay just outside it, which is reason enough for many people to stop.

In Gweru town

For a practical overnight on the Harare to Bulawayo road, the town has a couple of dependable options. The Regency Hotel Fairmile is the established hotel on the Fairmile side of the city, the recognisable full-service base for business travellers and through-traffic. Bradley Gardens Lodge is the quieter, guest-house alternative for a calmer, garden-set night. Between them they cover most of what a stopover in Gweru calls for.

Antelope Park, just outside town

The reason to plan a night in Gweru rather than just drive through is Antelope Park, the private reserve a short way outside the city on the banks of the Gweru River. It is best known as a base for lion conservation and research, and it offers a bush-lodge stay with activities on a large private property. If your trip has any wildlife ambition, this is the Midlands stop that justifies itself.

The wider Midlands and beyond

Because Gweru's own list is short, a longer stay in the region often means looking outward, towards Bulawayo to the south-west or Harare to the north-east, both within easy driving distance. The carousel below starts with the genuine Gweru and Midlands options and then widens to those neighbouring cities, with each card labelled by where it actually sits so there are no surprises at check-in.
