01The airlines

Which airlines fly to Harare?

Harare's Robert Gabriel Mugabe International (HRE) is served by five main long-haul carriers and a fleet of regional and domestic operators:

  • Emirates — daily direct via Dubai (DXB). The most reliable long-haul option for UK, Australian and US passengers.
  • Qatar Airways — via Doha (DOH). Often the cheapest reliable option from the UK and a strong product.
  • Ethiopian Airlines — via Addis Ababa (ADD). The cheapest option from North America and a major hub for connections within Africa.
  • Kenya Airways — via Nairobi (NBO). Solid African network, occasionally the cheapest for European origins.
  • South African Airways & Airlink — the regional carriers, dominant on Joburg–Harare and Cape Town–Harare with multiple daily frequencies.

02When to book

When is the cheapest time to fly?

Harare fares move with the diaspora calendar, not the European tourism calendar. Cheapest months are typically February to May and September to early November — between the end of one school holiday and the start of the next.

The expensive windows are mid-December to mid-January (Zimbabwean Christmas travel from the UK and SA), July (school-holiday-aligned visits home), and Easter week.

Book 8–12 weeks ahead for the off-peak and 16+ weeks ahead for Christmas. Last-minute fares from the UK to Harare in December regularly exceed £2,000 return.

03Flight time

How long is the flight?

Roughly: London 13–15 hours one-stop, Sydney 22–28 hours one or two stops, New York 18–22 hours one-stop, Toronto 20–24 hours one-stop, Dubai 8 hours direct, Joburg 1 hour 50 minutes direct.
