Why "Mutapa"?
Centuries ago, the Mutapa Empire didn't care about modern borders. Its trade and political networks stretched across the Zimbabwean plateau, reached into Zambia, dominated the coast of Mozambique, and traded down into South Africa.
To run this massive territory without modern technology, the empire built a brilliant information network. They relied on mutume, who were elite royal runners. These runners memorised complex news verbatim and sprinted across the region to deliver it. They used mountaintop fire relays to flash alerts across provinces in hours, and traded intelligence with global merchants along the Zambezi River.
We chose the name The Mutapa Times because we do the exact same thing today. The flow of people, money, and news between these four countries isn't new; it is centuries old. Like those ancient runners, we hunt down fragments of news scattered across regional hubs and global capitals, piece them together, and bring you the full picture.
How we work
We are a news aggregator and intelligence hub. We believe in supporting the media ecosystem, so we always credit and link directly to the original newsrooms whose reporting we cite, driving traffic back to them, while adding our own context and macro analysis.
